St Petersburg

We travelled to St Petersburg in June 2002. The date had been chosen in order to experience the ‘White Nights’ – the nights, when it never gets dark. For the summer solstice we had booked a concert that lasted over midnight.

The city offers a huge variety of attractions, amongst them the Hermitage – one ofthe largest art museums in the world, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood, or the cruiser Aurora, which fired the first shot that started the October revolution in 1917.

But none of the hundreds of pictures I took of the must-sees reflects my subjective image of St Petersburg. It has rather been built on little spotlights – like the boy in the window, the lady asking for a donation or the street worker resting together with the street signs.
