Namibia – Wildlife
Namibia is home to a remarkable variety of animal species. National parks such as Etosha provide unique opportunities to observe wildlife in ways that are not always possible in the open wilderness.
Although wildlife was not the focus of our journey, two experiences left a lasting impression.
In a dried-up riverbed, we witnessed the elusive desert elephants, a species uniquely adapted to the arid climate and scarce water sources. A particularly memorable moment was observing a mother elephant with her young calf and a newborn, just a few weeks old.
Despite Namibia’s low traffic volume, cheetahs frequently fall victim to road accidents. Additionally, many are killed by farmers who suspect them of preying on livestock. A dedicated conservation foundation works to rescue orphaned cheetahs, rehabilitating them for eventual release into the wild when they are capable of surviving independently. Our close encounter with these majestic big cats was incredibly moving.
Beyond these highlights, we also encountered many other fascinating animal species, each contributing to Namibia’s rich biodiversity.
